Ingredients for Baked French Toast Casserole

French Toast:

1 loaf challah bread, cubed into 1" pieces (~10 cups),

8 large eggs

3 cups whole milk

½ cup granulated sugar

¼ cup brown sugar

1 tbsp vanilla

1 tablespoon orange zest

Streusel:

½ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup brown sugar

pinch of salt

½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed

Directions

  • Arrange bread cubes in a greased 9×13-inch dish.

  • Combine eggs, milk, sugars, vanilla, spices, & zest and pour evenly over the bread. Press the cubes down into the custard mixture, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Overnight is best.

(Note: do not add the streusel topping until right before baking)

  • Prepare the streusel by mixing flour, brown sugar, spices, and salt. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or 2 forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Sprinkle the streusel over the soaked bread cubes.

  • Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until golden brown and the custard is set.

  • Let it cool for 5 minutes before serving.

  • Serving suggestions: powdered sugar, maple syrup, and/or fresh berries.

Enjoy!

Tasty Option: Make this a holiday dish by replacing one of the cups of milk with a cup of egg nog.
